Alexa, we will miss you

Alexa was 73 years old. She was an incredible creative and an excellent artisan and owner of Out of Hand Studios, creating weavings, lampwork beads and jewelry. A very spiritual being with an intense love of life and the people and animals in it. She was a 20-year member of the Douglas Planning Commission and a Douglas Poll Worker. She rescued too many animals to name. Alexa’s friends are too numerous to address but include the Douglas Devas and Lakeshore Fiber Arts Guild. Alexa will live on in all our memories.  Alexa Urquhart transitioned on Good Friday, April 15, 2022, from Cancer.

Alexa was our auctioneer for our in house auctions, her program just last Sept. on making beads was wonderful ( see the blog for Sept. 2021), and her energy was contagious, she will be missed.

Basketmaking with Nancy DeVries

Nancy taught us the versatile Figure Eight stitch which can be used to make a broach or necklace or the start of a basket.  We used clothesline and embroidery floss but many other fibers may be used, both natural and manmade.

It was a nice day with show and tell and Easter Bunny cookies.  It was also a very sad day as we learned of the passing of a dear friend and member, Alexa Urquhart.  Please see the next blog with pictures in remembrance of her.

This is the broach she taught us.

Nancy makes lots of styles of baskets.

Using fabric strips.

Incorrect wrapping

Also incorrect at first but learning. The basics are wrap 3 and then down thru middle,
 always wrap away from you.

Priscilla learned a new technique called Nalbinding.
Nalbinding is a Scandinavian fabric-making technique which pre-dates knitting.
There is a lot of history in this technique, it does not unravel if you get a hole.

Jennifer brought her flower packet art project, it was a brown bag project and
her bag came from Alexa.
