LAKESHORE
Fiber    Arts    Guild

September 13, 2016

PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release

Byron Center, Michigan – The Lakeshore Fiber Arts Guild’s next meeting will be on Wed., Oct. 5, featuring Jan Koster and Diane Mulder on “Designing Your Own Costumes, at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St., Holland, MI 49423, starting promptly at 6:30pm with social time beginning at 6pm.  Non-members are asked to pay $5 toward the speaker’s fee.

Longtime friends Diane Mulder and Jan Koster, both Holland residents, have shared a passion for creating artful costumes, clothing and decorative items for their homes.  In addition to creating many one-of-a-kind costumes, they both worked in costuming for the Holland Community Theatre.  Diane will present her expertise in costume research, utilized in 1986 for her design of the Men’s Staphorst Dutch Dance Costume.  Jan will use her alteration and pattern making experience to demonstrate how to change basic patterns to create different costume effects.

Diane Mulder worked for Kohl’s Department Stores where her job as a staging specialist was setting up the individual store displays for their new stores.  Her current job at Dutch Village involves many of the same creative skills in the area of displays and buying for their store.  In addition, Diane has also created many commissioned costumes over the years.

After receiving an Elementary Teaching Degree, Jan Koster returned to Michigan State’s Clothing and Textile degree program to pursue her love of textiles, pattern making and clothing design.  Jan opened a shop, The Tiny Tailor, which centered on alterations and custom design clothing.  She loves the creative process of getting an idea, deciding how to create it and designing patterns or methods to make those ideas into clothing, costumes or home decorating items.

The Lakeshore Fiber Arts Guild invites anyone interested in the textile fiber arts to their monthly program meetings held the first Wednesday of each month at the Holland Area Arts Council.  For more information, visit the guild’s blog at http://lakeshorefiberartsguild.blogspot.com or contact jgould1526@gmail.com or 616-878-1526.

Our First Meeting of the 2016-2017 Season Featured Nancy McRay, "Small Looms, Big Results"

Nancy McRay gave a wonderful talk and demonstration on rigid heddle looms and tapestry looms.

Nancy McRay has been teaching and producing a wide variety of fiber arts since the mid-1980’s. With an MFA from the University of Michigan, plus years of experience as the Fine Arts Coordinator for East Lansing and 10 years as a yarn shop owner, Nancy has knowledge to share, and she loves to share it.  Having recently moved to the Traverse city region, Nancy is establishing a studio on the beautiful south shore of Elk Lake.

Check out the Fiber Weekend at Interlochen:

Following are some of her weavings she shared with us.

The blue pattern and the lacy patterns she weaves using pick up sticks.

This vest was made on a 10" wide loom

As a weaver I was very impressed with all the different techniques she used on a rigid heddle loom, including Shibori, Theo Moorman technique, Krokbragd, Lace, and Collapse weave. She prefers the Schacht 25" rigid heddle loom.  She also does tapestry weave on an upright tapestry loom.
Nancy also dyes and handspins her own wool.

Kathy loves to spin but had never tried out a loom even though she has one.  She volunteered to warp the rigid heddle loom of Nancy's and show us how to weave

Nancy then demonstrated on another loom a double weave technique where the cloth is connected on only one edge to make fabric twice as wide.

Some of Nancy's Favorite Books

The books Nancy brought to the meeting last night:

Simple Woven Garments - Sara Goldenberg and Jane Patrick

Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom - Syne Mitchell

Hands On Rigid Heddle Weaving - Betty Lynn Davenport

The Weaver’s Idea Book - Jane Patrick

Contemporary Tapestry - Carol Russell

Tapestry Handbook - Carol Russell

Tapestry Weaving - Nancy Harvey
