"Art of Feltmaking : My Fiber Palette” with Masha Kakhova

What a wonderful afternoon with Masha and her Wet Felting technique.

Masha Kakhova

I obtained my Master’s degree in computer science at the Moscow State University of Railway Engineering. I later received training as an animator and computer graphics specialist. I began my career at the Russian State TV Center. I then moved into advertising and publishing, where I worked as a graphic designer, photographer and an art director at agencies both in Russia and the U.S. But my love of crafting, learned at young age from my Russian grandmother, eventually drew me from computers and technology to the world of art and nature, with its physical textures and shapes. I enrolled in a variety of private and group classes in Moscow and, along with online classes, I learned the techniques of fiber arts and felting from internationally recognized designers and felt-makers and began a new career as a professional fiber artist.

I am always learning and creating, and I love passing my knowledge on to others. My favorite subject is wool felting, which I teach in my Felting with Marikah classes. My goal is to promote art and sustainable living, and bring the natural beauty of our world into our lives and our homes through different forms and colors.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL QUILTING MONTH WITH A QUILT HOP

There is more information at each library, a very nice brochure and demos.

Linda S. has quilts in Holland library,  Wendy R. has quilts in Spring Lake and in Grand Haven.

Six libraries are celebrating National Quilting Month in March and have many activities planned to entice people to visit their libraries and to celebrate quilt making.

Six libraries are participating – Coopersville Area, Gary Byker (Hudsonville), Georgetown, Herrick, Loutit, and Spring Lake.  A Quilt Hop Library Card, punched by at least 3 participating libraries, will put you in the running for a $25 gift certificate from a local quilt shop.  Highlights of the month include a special kickoff event featuring Marsha MacDowell of MSU with a Zoom program on The Quilt Index: Michigan & World Quilt History, classes, demos, mystery quilt blocks, free bookcase quilt pattern, and displays.

This is a great opportunity to support both our local libraries and Lighthouse Quilt Guild in Grand Haven!  We encourage you to attend demos by two of our own members: sign up for these online at the Library.

Chris Hornby will talk about and demo English Paper Piecing at Loutit on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:00 p.m.

Karen Katje will talk about Quilt Fracturing at Spring Lake Library on Tuesday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m.

In addition, many of you know Claudia Squio of Colorway Arts, and she will be doing a presentation on Cartonnage at Loutit on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m.

Three of us from Spring Lake did the Quilt Hop Library tour.  It was  a wonderful day seeing quilts and visiting various libraries in the county.  Check them out if you get the chance.  What a treat to talk to people again.
